Darryl A. Perkins was born in Lenoir, North Carolina in 1954 and grew up in the Bushtown section of Caldwell County.  After graduating from Hibriten High School in 1972 he attended Winston-Salem State University where he majored in biology.  His summers were spent working as a Naturalist for the National Park Service at the Peaks of Otter Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Lynchburg, VA.  After college, he served in the US Army for four years.  He is a Master Falconer and served six years as president of the North American Falconer's Association following a four-year stint on the Board of Directors, and served over twenty years as president of the Massachusetts Falconry and Hawk Trust.

He is a motivational speaker, avid photographer, and writer, and has had articles and photos published in all the major falconry publications including The Journal of the North American Falconer's Association, International Falconer, and American Falconry.  He is president of DPerk Enterprise LLC - the consulting/publishing company he founded in 1998.  He is considered an expert on the Northern Goshawk and is the author of Understanding Goshawks - a complete work on the training and ecology of the Northern Goshawk.   He has always had a fascination with wolves. His third novel, Setzer’s Creek has just been published.
